Does it hurt to get your tongue pierced?

A) Yes, it does. But not nearly as much as you might anticipate. As to how much it hurts, that question is very relative and it varies from person to person depending upon their individual pain threshold. You could compare it with a ear piercing and say that it hurts less to get a tongue piercing than it does to get your ears pierced (which is not to say that ear piercing is very painful). Ear piercing is generally done with a gun which forces the dull point of the earring into the ear whereas a tongue piercing is done with a very sharp needle and so the pain is lesser.

This is not to say that it doesn’t hurt at all. It does, but the pain that is felt is nothing that a normal person can’t handle. In fact, tongue piercing is one of those things that is not as bad as it appears to be. The preceding apprehension and dread about how painful it will be is usually more than the actual event of piercing. The pain (little that there is) lasts for just a jiffy and when the piercing process is over, you will smile and won’t help thinking - ‘that wasn’t so bad’.

Some tips to remember while getting a tongue piercing

· Get your piercing done from a trustworthy place and by someone who has experience and knows what he is doing. The more the experience of the piercer, the lesser the pain for you.
· DO NOT go to some seedy joint just to save some money. It could end up costing you a lot more in medical bills.
· Make sure that all the equipment needed (needle, piercing instrument etc) for the piercing is sealed pack and brand new.
· Note that the area to be pierced is disinfected properly and so is the jewelry being used.

Occasionally piercers may use some numbing agent for a tongue piercing. This does not make the pain go away completely but just takes a little of the bite off. Considering the time, cost, as well as the unnecessary bother, it does not seem to make sense to use a numbing agent as the pain lasts for literally just a second.

Sensitivity to pain is an individual thing so there is no way to say how much a tongue piercing will hurt you. But rest assured how much ever it may be, it will not make you want to scream bloody murder. It hurts, but is over so quickly that it is usually done with even before it started and thus you don’t have much time to think about the pain.

You could take somebody along for moral support though. And think about this – ‘the pain will last a second, but you can enjoy your piercing forever’.

So go for it!
