| It's very simple, really, to tell
how body gauges work in relation to your piercing. In the world of body
jewelry, thickness of the shaft (the portion inserted in the body)
increases as the gauge number decreases.
In other words, 12 gauge is thicker than
14 gauge, etc. Here's a graphic (not to scale) of the basic
differences in the common sizes:

14 gauge is the most common thickness
used in popular body jewelry (belly rings, tongue rings, etc.)
